A Day for the Brain

Taking Care of Our Brains

My brother and I were sipping our coffees the day after Christmas, both feeling a little “meh”…we said, “what should we do today?” I had the idea to create a day solely focused on taking care of our brain health.

We wrote out our intentions for the day, filling out categories and actually signing our names on the bottom to really hold ourselves accountable. Side note: even writing a
to do list of sorts can help us feel better!

While I am thrilled that self care has become mainstream, there is also a huge distinction between taking care of ourselves by “tuning out” and “tuning in”. Tuning out may look like catching up on a show or watching TikToks. Keep reading for ways to do the opposite—tuning in!

Even though watching a show and scrolling online (or having a drink, or buying something etc) might feel good in the moment…When we look at self care as a long-term journey, it’s important to consider the multiple facets of what it really means to take care of ourselves.

Cool, I Want to Try!

Below are some examples of what we came up with to take care of our brains and mental health. Community connection, physical movement, time outside and reducing screentime are huge! Especially if we are feeling isolated, lonely, or down, making even just a small reach for connection can make a large impact. Also, did you know being creative is good for us?

Fun fact: Ben’s creative pursuit of the day was making hummus from scratch and it was really good!

By no means are we suggesting you restrict or limit yourself in a way that feels emotionally unsafe—this is more about making decisions and choices that are really helpful for our brains and moods!
