The Simple Things

Keeping it Simple
A theme that comes up with clients—both in therapy and coaching—is often identifying positive (adaptive) and negative (maladaptive) coping skills.
Building a toolbox of positive coping skills is probably one of the singularly most impactful steps we can each take to support our overall mental health and wellbeing.
QUICK VOCAB:
Maladaptive or negative coping mechanisms: habits that might feel good in the moment, but aren’t helpful or supportive for us in the long term
Adaptive or positive coping skills: practices that both feel good (potentially less natural at first) and are supportive for our overall mental health and wellbeing
It seems simple until we are reminded that many people haven’t had the space, guidance or access to ponder questions such as: What makes me feel good? What makes me feel safe? What do I have a hard time with? Why might I have a hard time with that? What do I tend to do when I don’t really want to feel something? What’s something I do habitually when I want to make myself feel better?
If you haven’t taken inventory lately, give it a go! What positive coping skills are in your toolbox?
A fave positive coping skill of mine = going on a walk in nature, meditating or just breathing on a rock and feeling the sun on my face
TENDER CO. x CAFFEINE DREAMS PODCAST
I had the honor of sitting down with Casey Arnold, founder of Big Ass Iced Coffee to chat about Tender Co., business, and how to listen to the body to know what’s right for you.
If you didn’t know this before…I had a lot of resistance going into the field of Social Work to become a therapist, even though it’s what I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Sometimes walking through the resistance leads to the biggest growth. Listen to the episode to learn more!
And be sure to follow Casey here and here for a) really good coffee and b) really good podcast episodes!
